Georgia is a direct access state, which allows for patients to be seen by a physical therapist before being provided a prescription or referral from their physician. This allows for an appointment to be scheduled quickly and a physical therapist to evaluate any pain or discomfort you are having without having to wait to be seen by your family physician. Following your initial evaluation you can be seen without a physician prescription for up to 8 visits within a 21 day period. Following this 21 day period, along with your therapist, you can decide if you have met your desired goals for physical therapy. If you have not met your goals, your therapist can guide you to a recommended specialist to receive further treatment and obtain a physical therapy prescription. Please see APTA.org on direct access with questions.
